Who are we?
Maun Refuge supports Syrian refugees in Mansfield, Nottinghamshire.
What do we do?
Maun Refuge is motivated by a wish to play our small part in addressing the world refugee crisis. We aspire to offer an example of how community cohesion can work.
- We offer group and individual support to re-start lives and to ease independent settlement in the UK.
- We enable social and healthy activities, joint visits and outings, language and conversation sessions
- Our volunteers have some funding from the lottery plus individual donations that help us to complement the ‘official’ resettlement work of our local authorities: Mansfield and Nottinghamshire
Why do we do it?
In 2015 many people were looking for ways to react to the expanding world refugee crisis. From Stockholm to Sheffield places were responding generously. We also said ‘why not us?’, knowing that the bigger places were overstretched. We set about trying to make it happen here where we know the services, the charities and the kind-heartedness of local people. The local authorities moved up a gear to provide the crucial basics – access to housing, health services, benefits and education. We wanted to develop the possibilities of healthy integration and positive acceptance within our local community.
We are grateful for the investment of the lottery and many local donors in our expanding work - currently with 34 refugees in eight families
